Stainless steel 904L pipes are produced by a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel having low carbon, high chromium (19–23%), high nickel (23–28%), molybdenum (4–5%), and added copper. This alloy exhibits superior resistance to severe reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid, and great resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Mechanically, 904L is moderately to high in strength, with excellent toughness and good weldability. The pipes remain sound under conditions of high pressure and temperature and are fit for harsh environments where normal stainless steels are likely not to function consistently.
